MIX IT UP WITH ECLECTIC DECORATING
An Eclectic decorating style mixes elements from at least two of the other three decorating styles (traditional,
contemporary, casual).
Combining elements from a variety of sources allows you to pick and choose your favorite elements. For example
you may love modern and contemporary style floor lamps, but feel a contemporary style couch doesn't give a homely
feel as you're looking for in your living area.
Eclectic style decorating is what you make it. There are no rules, bring togther pieces that you like and blend
them together using interior decorating techniques, such as paint, fabric and staining.
Paint is an inexpensive method of creating a theme between items. For example you may have two wooden chairs that
don't match, but you can paint these chairs the same color to bring unity to your space.
Fabric can also be utilized in this manner. Sofa slipcovers can make a contemporary style sofa and a traditional
armchair work together. Also co-ordinate your pillows and curtains.
Staining furniture is also inexpensive, if you do not prefer paint. You may have a rustic style armoire and
traditional coffee table and modern dining table, all in different wood finishes. Sand all items back and
stain the color to blend. Also similiar tones of stains can be used rather than the same stain on each item.
As you can see styles can overlap and co-ordinate easily. The key to remember is to ensure you like it. Do not decorate
your house and think about what other people like, you are the one living there. Happy Decorating!
